Tallinn and?

We are planning a 6-9 night holiday to Estonia for the beginning of September. This will be our first trip to the Baltics.

So far we have allowed 2-3 days to fully explore Tallinn and 1 day for a trip to Helsinki. We would also like to see some of the Estonian countryside. Would this be best done as day trips (probably by hire car) or should we stay somewhere else for a few nights. If not in Tallinn where can anyone recommend and how many nights.

Thank you.

If you want to see some beautiful Estonian countryside, I%26#39;d suggest you stay in Tartu and make some day trips from there. Lots to see and do in SE Estonia.

Well, it%26#39;s difficult to give advice because it deepends on what you are interessted in. For the first Tallinn is a town you never will fully explore ;-) as there are so much to see. So be prepared to go there again and again, (I%26#39;ve just been there four times since my first visit in 2001 and I%26#39;m going back, that%26#39;s sure):-)

But, yes there are some other towns that is worth a visit such as:

Tartu- a popular town because of the University and the students.

Pärnu - more a summer town, not so big, but worth seeing. The Estonian summer capitol

Haapsalu- nice town, nice houses

Paldiski- a former Soviet marine base( the last soliders left in 1994) well I wouldn%26#39;t really call it nice, but quit interresting.

I%26#39;d suggest either going to the islands of Saarema and Hiiuma which is really unique experience (also a long-time favourite among Finnish tourists ) or to the South-Estonia. You can take this as an example for your holiday route: http://www.travelmerchant.eu/ -%26gt; Special interest tours -%26gt; culinary experience holiday. I%26#39;ve taken a similar route myself and it%26#39;s culturally very interesting area of Estonia.

I%26#39;d say 2 nights should be enough to get a general idea or you could just visit Tartu - famous university town and easy to reach by public transport.

Alex and Asterix thank you for your replies.

When visiting a country we like to walk around the main towns and visit historical sites (castles, monastries etc). I also like to learn a bit about the local history so a couple of museums or sites about Estonia%26#39;s independence would be interesting.

We would also like to spend about 3 days in the countryside or beach to dome some walking and generally unwind. I read on one website you can go bog walking (North West Estonia?) - this certainly sounds different.

Thank you Tugrul, I will look into the islands and also the suggested route.

As a local - if you love nature, bog walking is what I would suggest. Interesting any time of the year.
