Restaurants in Tallinn for the adventurer

Hello all,

I will be a first time traveler to Tallinn, heading there in 3 weeks. Looking for authentic Estonian cuisine, even if it is off the beaten path a bit. We are staying in the Old City, but are willing to check out other less %26quot;touristy%26quot; nabes if it results in a good meal. Have seen a few websites of Estonian restaurants in the Old City and they seemed a bit pricey and tourist trappy. Also, our tastes are not for the faint of heart, so bring on the suggestions--the more eccentric the better!! Thanks in advance.

Hi here are a few of oir favourite restaurants which serve Estonian cuisine

Eesti Maja at Lauteri 1 who serve a mixture of meat and fish dishes including the wonderfuly named %26quot;Piggy Under a Cloud%26quot; and delicious drink/dessert Kama - good food, good service and good value - their website is www.eestimaja.ee

Vanaema Jurees , Rataskaevu 10/12 is a cosy cellar restaurant serving hearty meat and fish dishes - lovely food - the lamb with blue cheese was very good - and a great atmosphere.

Balthasar - Raeojka plats 11 - is a garlic restaurant serving International cuisine featuring, well, garlic! The food and service are both excellent - the garlic soup and garlic ice cream being particulary delicious - more expensive than some but the food reflects this and the location overlooking the town square is great. Their website is www.balthasar.ee

Must Lammas at Sauna 2 is a stylish restaurant serving such Caucasian cuisine such as Georgian Cheese Pie with yoghurt sauce (Lovely!), trout with plums and raisins and Shashlyk grilled meat. Very good food in a relaxed atmosphere - as the name of the restaurant translates as Black Sheep they also sell Black Sheep Ale produced in Masham in the Yorkshire Dale not far from where i am originally froms! Their website is www.mustlammas.ee

As for bars I really like Hell Hunt at Pikk 39, great beer and great atmosphere. Also St. Patricks at Suur-Karja 8 was a lovely bar. And remarkably quiet.

Most of the bars seem to be open til the early hours. We were certainly in th Vana Wiru Bar well after midnight! As for the DM bar - well if you are a Mode fan like my husband tou will just love it. We were there a couple of years ago when the band were in town and it was madness. Especially when Martin Gore came in!!

Enjoy Tallinn - we have been twice and loved every minute!

as for nightlife in old town, there%26#39;s some bars, where local and tourists both go to.

there%26#39;s levist väljas, the main place to spend your night and party - there%26#39;s mainly young people there (older just can%26#39;t take the heat), mostly students %26amp; bohemians.

also there%26#39;s juuksur on vaimu street (two steps from hell hunt), it%26#39;s a quiet place during weekdays, but in weekends, life gets there as well; sometimes there are concerts there, but the future ones aren%26#39;t marked on the web page @ www.rampade.org

these 2 bars are quite close to each other and in the old town.
