Hi,
Is there a direct bus/ train service from Riga (or Cesis) to Tartu? A few guide books only mentioned Riga to Tallin route.
Likewise for Parnu. Is it a good time to visit Parnu in early part of May? Thank you.

Hi! No train service from Riga to Tartu, but bus service by Eurolines: http://www.eurolines.ee/?id=1249%26amp;lang=en
by ecolines: http://www.ecolines.net/
and also by some Estonian coaches: www.bussireisid.ee/index.html?MENU=%26KEEL=en
From Cesis there are probably some local Latvian buses, but not sure, you could ask in Latvian forum.
It depends what%26#39;s your goal for visiting Pärnu. Most people prefer it in summer because of the beach and sea to swim. But otherwise it%26#39;s beautiful in spring too.

Thank you. I have problems opening the english version of Eurolines.
Basically, I may have to choose between Tartu and Parnu, due to time constraints. I am not really a beach/seaside person (we have sun all year round), but was told that it is a beautiful town with good galleries and museum. For Tartu, from what I gathered, is a student town but very active in summer (not sure in May?)
Another question, have you been to Saaremaa? Is having own transport necessary? An overnight stay should be sufficient?
Thanks.

Both of these towns have their virtues. Pärnu is a lovely town with small galleries and has a beach resort (summer dream) charm. Sill quite different from Singapore, as no huge hotels, but villas and smaller summerhouses mostly.
Tartu is a student town and is and has been very much influenced by the university.
Here the choice is yours ;) It would be very difficult to suggest which one.

Saaremaa is lovely and one can go there by bus from Pärnu or Tallinn and also I think Tartu, but as you have to take a ferry to get to Saaremaa, it takes quite some time to get there. At the same time I very much love taking the ferry, but that may differ person by person.

Thank you all. If looking at the route I am taking, most likely I am going to Parnu as it is on the way to Saremaa.

in tartu the beginning of may (and all of may i think) is one of the most active periods round the year (spring, beer, sunshine etc).
from riga you can get straight to tartu (there are 3 buses per day i think) but also, you can take a bus to parnu and the change to a bus from parnu to tartu. that should give you much more options and buses to choose from. and it doesn%26#39;t add much to the fare (if any at all).
i would personally recommend you the Riga Bustation site at http://www.autoosta.lv/?lng=eng%26amp;cat=1 when choosing buses. as the estonian places are translated into latvian, instead of parnu you should type pernava, tallinn = tallina and tartu is tartu. igaunia in brackets just means estonia in latvian.
