Hi... Following a family reunion in Helsinki next year, in August I hope, I plan to spend a few days in St. Petersburg and am also thinking about a day or two in Tallinn.
I would appreciate any and tips/advice/information about the ferry to Tallinn and train to St. Petersburg and hotels in Tallin and St. Petersburg. (And for the matter, Helsinki.)
Any other tips for traveling in this area and favorite to see and do also appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi
We went to Tallinn in January and got a cheap deal staying at the Hotel Portus. It is a nice hotel right next to the port so handy for when you get off the ferry from Helsinki. It is only a short walk (10/15 mins) to the centre of Tallinn too.
Have a good time.

There is no train anymore.
For more information about the bus see,

There is a new air service between Tallinn and St. Petersburg (I assume it%26#39;s operating)

Do you know how long a bus trip would be. How safe is bus travel there?

You may want to reconsider your order of cities. You could go Tallinn-Helsinki-St. Pete. There are two trains daily from Helsinki to St. Petersburg and an overnight one to Moscow if you are interested. These trains are reasonably priced.

Bus from St P to Tallinn is about 7 or 8 hrs and is completely safe. Copious amounts of ferry services are available from Helsinki to Tallinn, in August especially. If you are not backtracking, I would recommend taking the train from Helsinki to St.P, or vice versa.
