Restaurants

Hi

I am visiting Tallinn next week and it is my friends birthday while we are there.

She would like to go for a nice meal and I was hoping somebody could advise me on the best restaurants in Tallinn. We like at all types of food and are looking for good quality. It would be good to try somehting local.

Also can you suggest activities for 3 days

Thanks

Hi...

For upscale restaurants check out

http://www.sparkling.ee/

For a medieval experience check out Olde Hansa (not sure about the website details, but it%26#39;s in Old Town)

Also, Clazz is a very nice contemporary restaurant/bar/jazz place - also in Old Town nearby Olde Hansa.

For quality (at a price) I%26#39;d go for Gloria (on Müürivahe) every time. Even in Soviet times they managed a superb meal and they are today reputed to be one of the best restaurants in Europe.

Ye Olde Hansa is corny but entertaining. If you go there, you might try the bear meat for novelty.

|||

Just returned from 10 days in Tallinn. That was my third trip. Gloria is one of the best restaurants in the world. You won%26#39;t see any advertising, it%26#39;s not a tourist destination. But any tourist with a culinary soul should go there. There is Gloria the Wine Bar and Gloria the restaurant. It is the restaurant that is so remarkable, but the wine bar is exquisite, too. It is expensive.

We found Buongiorno (in the Old Town) to be quite good in the Italian style. Old Hansa and Peppersack are interesting and touristy. Kuldse Notsu Korts has authentic Estoniana cuisine (try the pork knuckle.)

There is no shortage of things to do or see. We went to the beach one day. The old Dominican Priory (not the one in Old Town) is a medieval treasure. The city museum is interesting.

There will be a waterfront festival soon, which looks great.

Of our three trips to Estonia, this was by far the best. Mostly because of their sining festival Lalupidu. Imagine 24,000 people all singing as a choir.

We spent 7 nights in Tallinn last year.

Kulde Norts Kurts gets a lot of votes on here but we actually preferred Hell Hunt and Karja Kelder. The last 2 are pubs so might not meet your requirements for somewhere special but both serve lovely pork

Our favourite restaurant was Must Lammas (translates to Black Sheep and if you are feeling homesick they have it in bottles!). Its a Georgian restaurant and the food was a bit more spiced (not hot) and flavousome than the more traditional Estonian fare.

If you like fish Mookala is very nice and quite smart inside. If you want to go Russian Troika is quite good.

|||

Hell Hunt is good for a reasonably priced acceptable meal in OK surroundings, but I certainly wouldn%26#39;t recommend it for a birthday treat.

|||

John,

I agree that Hell Hunt is not suitable for a special meal. It was though our favourite pub and well worth a visit if only for a drink.

It looked quite scruffy from the outside but was very warm and cosy inside. I also liked the fact that most of the customers were locals which is quite unusual for such a centrally located place.

The tume beer was also very good!!

Hi here are a few of or favourite restaurants which serve Estonian cuisine

Eesti Maja at Lauteri 1 who serve a mixture of meat and fish dishes including the wonderfuly named %26quot;Piggy Under a Cloud%26quot; and delicious drink/dessert Kama - good food, good service and good value - their website is www.eestimaja.ee

Vanaema Jurees , Rataskaevu 10/12 is a cosy cellar restaurant serving hearty meat and fish dishes - lovely food - the lamb with blue cheese was very good - and a great atmosphere.

Balthasar - Raeojka plats 11 - is a garlic restaurant serving International cuisine featuring, well, garlic! The food and service are both excellent - the garlic soup and garlic ice cream being particulary delicious - more expensive than some but the food reflects this and the location overlooking the town square is great. Their website is www.balthasar.ee

Must Lammas at Sauna 2 is a stylish restaurant serving such Caucasian cuisine such as Georgian Cheese Pie with yoghurt sauce (Lovely!), trout with plums and raisins and Shashlyk grilled meat. Very good food in a relaxed atmosphere - as the name of the restaurant translates as Black Sheep they also sell Black Sheep Ale produced in Masham in the Yorkshire Dale not far from where i am originally froms! Their website is www.mustlammas.ee

|||

Must Lammas is an interesting restaurant, but it is not at all Estonian. It specialises in Caucasian dishes.

|||

Yes sorry about that - though it does mention in my post that Must Lammas specializes in Caucasan cuisine I suppose it seems, from the opening paragraph, as if all the restaurants I mention serve Estonian.

I would edit if I could but hopefully people will realise.
