Best time of year to visit Tallinn?

Hello, all. I have just bought a package for three nights in Hotel Telegraaf which can be redeemed anytime from now until 31st October 2010!

I was initially thinking that it might be nice to go around Christmas, but that might be limiting in terms of possible day trips out due to the weather (eg: ferries to Helsinki).

When do you think is the best time to go to Tallinn?

Thanks!

Hey there...

I just got back from Tallinn on Sunday and the weather was great, blue sky and sunshine. I have also been in March, when it was cold and covered in snow, but the place, especially Old Town looked beautiful. I would recommend anytime between March and August...depending on your weather preferences!!!

There%26#39;s no problem with day trips any time of the year. The fastest ferries don%26#39;t run in the ice season but 2 hours is quick enough.

On the other hand, it IS very dark in December. In summer (July/August) the Old Town is fairly crowded with tourists (not as bad as some places but bad enough). I prefer May or early September myself. I%26#39;ve been going to Tallinn regularly for over 30 years.

Just really wanted to echo what John said above.

We have been to Tallin in

March - snowy, beautiful but very, very cold

December - lovely Christmas market, a very quiet feel to the city - at times we felt like we were the only visitors there - but cold, icy and short days.

July - lovely weather, long days means you have more daylight at your disposal! But really very busy.

If we went back I would prefer to go in Spring or Autumn as I feel you then have the advantage of the city being quieter than in Summer but the days been longer than in Winter.

Also some museums have reduced opening hours in Winter so you may want to factor that into your decision. And certainly though we really enjoyed our Winter trips we ventured further afield in Summer.

How about mid October? Is it very dark in the day? Is it very cold? Will it rain everyday? As I will be there from 15 to 17 Oct, thank you!

to Sharonang

on 15th of October sun rise is 7.59 and sun set 18.14., so nor wery bad at all.there is some day light between it.

It may rain of course, however they promised long and warm autumn this year

Thank you for your great information, greatly appreciated! Would you recommend a nice place with Autumn maple leave and countryside to visit (I will definitely to visit OLD TOWN as this is my first choice) as I will be there 3 days, thank you so much for your great help :)

The autumn colours are already beginning now, so they%26#39;ll be pretty much over by mid-October.

Thanks to all of you for your contibutions - I think we%26#39;ll wait until May/June of 2010 and make the most of the longer days.

Thanks again!

Thank you for your info. Very sad if I couldn%26#39;t have a change to see the autumn colour :(

I would like to know there is any other transport from ferry port to Tallinn Swiss Hotel beside Taxi as I read reviews that taxi is very very expensive in Tallinn.

Tallinn is very small, you can walk....and taxi%26#39;s are not that expensive..
