Hi i%26#39;m off to Tallinn in a weeks time am I best taking Estonian Kroons of Euro%26#39;s or Dollars? Most money will be spent on food and beer in bars, what would you reccomend.

It%26#39;s hard not to be rude when someone asks this question, but I guess that many people in the UK do not realise that Estonia is a state of the art, 21st century nation who have their own currency. Estonian Kroons is the only acceptable currency, some people may take your euros but they will give you a dreadful exchange rate.

The best place to pre-buy Kroons is Marks and Spencer and the best card to use in one of the many many ATM%26#39;s over there is the Nationwide visa debit card.

How did you surmise that the OP was questioning Estonia as a place, by asking what currency to take, i am confused?

A question for you jackie... If a hotel quotes your rate in euro%26#39;s- dont they expect to be paid in euro%26#39;s??

Hi

They quote the rate in Euros so that it is easy to comapare like with like. You pay in the currency of the country. If you use a credit card, as we do, it will say on your statement the cost in whatever their national currency is, the exchange rate the card uses and finally what it has cost in your own currency.

Unless you are in the Euro Zone then the Euro doesn%26#39;t really come into it.

To the OP,

Yes, you%26#39;ll be using the Estonian Kroon (EEK) for all your purchases here. Credit/Debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, so the need to bring large amounts of cash isn%26#39;t necessary. You%26#39;ll really just be looking to get the best exchange rate you can, whether it%26#39;s buying EEK with GBP/USD or using your CC.

Estonia would like to join the Euro Zone, but our current inflation rate is too high (we meet all other requirements), so it will be several more years before that happens.
