Good afternoon from New Zealand!
My wife and I are considering a couple of weeks in Estonia sometime in June or July 2009.
Apart from the well documented things to see in Tallinn, where else should we consider going? We are interested in history, the country side, art, meeting the local people. We are not big hotel people, would be interested in Hostelling International hostels, or similar.
All suggestions and information appreciated.
Thanks.

i would highly recommend renting a car and going to parnu(summer capital of estonia) and hapsalu( visit the castle and you maybe lucky to see the %26#39;white lady%26#39;) taking a ferry to the islands - hiiumaa or saaremaa if you have enough time.
in tallinn you have got to go to berghouse - freshly brewed beer, make sure you try as many different ones as possible, also if you dare, try pigs ears! sounds gross but its delicious, better then mr.porky.
rockalmare museum in oismae, tallin is a lovely open air museum. old tallinn is a one big museum, but please visit sea museum in the %26#39;paks maragrita%26#39; or %26#39;fat margaret%26#39; good luck and hope you will enjoy it.

2. you can travel by bus only to some nice smalltowm
universitytown Tartu or summercity Pärnu or to Haapsalu. Or Rakvere.
3. The best way is to rent a car and go see Estonia. To Lahemaa (www.lahemaa.ee) Nice wild nature, old villages, sea ...and to visit some small nice towm.-f.e..Rakvere..
Ot go to Hiiumaa or to Saaremaa, islands with a beutiful nature and old farmhouses. www.hiiumaa.ee www.saaremaa.
or go to south-Estonia, also very beutiful, there we even have small hills.
If you arrive , you can get all info from touristcenter or from you hotel. WE have more than 10 regions and for everyone are booklets.

I highly recommend Saaremaa island. I biked there a couple of years ago and found it a great way of getting around. The top sights include a well preserved meteor crater (an awesome sight), a heritage village museum and much else. The main town Kuressaar boasts an enormous castle.
I also second Tartu as a destination. It has an identity very different from that of Tallinn and has plenty to see and do.
I wouldn%26#39;t bother much with Pärnu, though. If you don%26#39;t go in for beaches and spas there isn%26#39;t a whole lot there.
