Can someone please advise how far away the Linnahall terminal is from the old town?
Would you recommend using this service instead of the ferry for a day trip to Helsinki?

Not far. Walking distance, in fact. It%26#39;s certainly quick (18 minutes from capital to capital), in fact the main problem is that it%26#39;s over far too soon.
They advertise tickets for as little as €49 one-way but these are virtually unobtainable (and are subject to an iniquitous €10 %26quot;booking fee%26quot;), so if you%26#39;re taking the family you can reckon on it costing more than that per head. If you decide to do this, slip a compact camera in your pocket as they take away all bags for the duration of the flight, which gives great views of Tallinn%26#39;s Old Town.
It makes the trip more exciting if you know about the unfortunate incident a few years ago in which a Copterline chopper crashed into the sea, killing all 14 people on board. But don%26#39;t worry, they don%26#39;t use that copter or crew any more.
The fast ferries (like Nordic Jet Line or Linda Line) get you there in 1½ hours, which is fast enough for most people.

Update: it IS possible to get a cheapo fare, although I never managed it online. I succeeded by going along to the booking office (there%26#39;s one in Helsinki railway station) and sweet-talking the lass there. I recommend it: 18 minutes with great views. I%26#39;m now in Tallinn after surviving the morning flight.

Excellent, John, I think we shall use that one way and then the ferry the other.

That%26#39;s precisely what I did. Copterline lands on the roof of the Linda Line terminal, so you can book your return trip conveniently on arrival. Linda is the cheapest of the fast ferries.
Be warned, though: Copterline is quite stingy with the cheapest fares, although their 8am service yesterday was more than half empty. Your best bet is to get in at the last minute. If it%26#39;s no go, you could just get on a ferry - they nearly always have space.
