Hi,
We are only in Tallinn for a long weekend. As well as seeing the historic city and the sights I was wondering what people thought was the feasibility of getting out and seeing any of the surrounding countryside. We are going at the end of Feb, so don%26#39;t know if the weather would making driving around a bit difficult.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Hi Bethanydi,
February is normally the cold and the ice and snow can be different to drive in.
The water falls/large streams looks lovely in winter time.

Hi,
weather conditions can be tricky. winter tyres are obligatory here in winter. by law, I mean.
How much time do you want to spend in Tallinn? How much time do you plan for driving around?
If you don%26#39;t feel comfortable driving on wintry roads, then there are a few bus-drive options. One is to the quite summer resort Haapsalu, where you can visit the bishop%26#39;s castle and enjoy wooden architecture. see www.haapsalu.ee The bus drive should take about 1:45. See www.bussireisid.ee for timetables.
If you just want to take a quick look at the countryside, then there is a minibus connection to Laulasmaa, appr 35 km from Tallinn. There is a small spa, with superb restaurant. But there is not much else to see. see www.laulasmaa.ee for the map
You could also try Rocca al Mare open-air museum, you can either take a taxi or local bus there. It%26#39;s just in the outskirts of Tallinn. Basically it reminds you of a village hidden in the forest. Actually it is a collection of of old farmhouses, windmills, even a church, stable (etc) from all over Estonia. It covers a rather large territory. If it isn%26#39;t too wet or muddy, it%26#39;s quite pleasant to go for a stroll. See www.evm.ee for details
If you take a car, then a drive to Lahemaa National Park would make a nice day trip. I personally would start with Viinistu art museum (a crazy place - art museum on a seashore practically in the middle of nowhere). It should be open Wed-Sun 11.00-18.00, the website www.viinistu.ee is only in Estonian. Then visit one of our classical manors - either Palmse or Sagadi. Both house beautiful museums. And to see both sides of Estonian culture - the nobles with manors and the culture of hardworking simple folk - make a short stop in either Altja fishermen%26#39;s village or Käsmu (the village of captains; also has a tiny, but lovely seafaring museum). I guarantee that you will see beautiful countryside on the way. For details see
