We have been to Tallin a couple of times and love the town, but would like to see more of Estonia, and I am thinking of going to Tartu in early March for a long weekend. Has anybody any suggestions as to where to stay, eat and what to see? It sounds like the best option of travelling to Tartu from Tallin is the bus, I think that the train is an option?

trains are more comfortable, more space, and 1st class has airplane seats. but train staions are little off the centre, still walking distance!
train info http://www.edel.ee/?CatID=6
busses leave more often, ps! look straight line Express, more comfort, some 2 stories and tv and everything.

ps! usually last weekend (27.04-3.05) of april are studentdays, as Tartu is university town - then streets are full of party! info coming to http://www.studentdays.ee/

Do the bus. Trains in the Baltics are not any faster.
The inyourpocket guide has some good recommendations on places to stay and eat. www.inyourpocket.com/data/download/tartu.pdf

I would recommend the train, preferably 1st class. The price difference isn%26#39;t that big, unless you are eligable for student discount. It%26#39;s true that railway traffic has been on on its best in the Baltics, but the connections btw Tallinn and Tartu as well as Tallinn and Viljandi have improved so much that they equal to buses.
As for the %26quot;what to see%26quot; - the calendar of events is located at http://kultuuriaken.tartu.ee/?setlang=EN The info on March isn%26#39;t quite there yet, but it%26#39;s a place to start.
The official tourist site is visttartu.com, also provides acommodation info. Although the city is small, I would recommend choosing a central hotel/hostel, because the local bus traffic isn%26#39;t very good (limited no of lines, long waiting times). Taxi prices should be the same as in Tallinn. I know that Tartu university has a few recently renovated student hostels in the centre, but I have never stayed in them. So I can%26#39;t really comment. Except that they should be quite affordable. If it%26#39;s not a party trip, then Uppsala House or Tampere House could be a nice accommodation expereince (no breakfast though, if I am not mistaken). These are small cultural centres in historic buildings that both run small guesthouses (see tamperemaja.ee and uppsalamaja.ee).

Tartu is lovely... Be sure and visit the beer hall with the highest roof of any bar in Europe. Top spot. Very quiet in March I should imagine. Lovely place to walk around though.

Yes, the beer hall is called Püssirohu kelder. Old gunpowder storage ;)
And in the earlier post I of course meant to say that train traffic has NOT been on its best in Estonia ... Sorry for the confusion!
