Looking for inspiration

We are looking for inspiration on where to holiday next summer and Tallinn is one option we are considering. We have visited Amsterdam, Budapest, Krakow and Prague and loved all four cities. In Amsterdam we enjoyed walking along the canals and in the other 3 cities enjoyed walking along the rivers and their bridges. Can we do something similar in Tallinn and will there be enough to see and do for 10 days. Perhaps there is somewhere else in Europe you,ve been to and would recommend. The slightest little detail would be appreciated. Thank you.

Tallinn is a marvellous place for wandering around. We spent seven days there last year and loved it (but it%26#39;s a bit short on rivers). However I think ten days would be a bit long so you might want to get elsewhere in the country or tie it in with Riga or Helsinki.

Hello,

Certainly I would recommend Tallinn. no canals in the old town though.

Would recommend staying in one of the old town hotels to get the full experiance.

There are water falls close to Tallinn though. Could also take a trip to saaremaa island, very beautiful there and lovely spa hotels there. but pre book your beauty treatments.

Would also recommend taking a day trip to Helsinki, either by fast boat or helicopter

So would recommend 6days in old town hotel in Tallinn, 3days in saaremaa island hotel and then 1 day in Helsinki

How about Tallinn and St Petersburg? There is an overnight train that runs between them which is fun(although don%26#39;t expect to get much sleep! The journey is about 7 hours with border crossings at around 3am...). You will certainly find plenty of canals and bridges in St Petes - it is known as the Venice of the North. We spent 2 days in Tallinn back in July and I would say another day or 2 at most would probably be OK. We had 4 days in St Petes which wasn%26#39;t enough though. If you need to factor in Helsinki for travel reasons then I%26#39;d say 1 day would be plenty. I would also recommend doing Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius in one trip and 10 days would allow you to see the major sights in all 3. The Baltic is a fantastic area - lots of history, loads of things to see and do, great restaurants and bars, plus friendly people too. I would definitely recommend it!

You could spend a few days in Tallinn, then go on to Riga. The bus is reasonably cheap and takes about 5 hours. Riga is bigger than Tallinn and so has more parks and sights. Tallinn retains more of its medieval character though: lots of narrow, cobbled streets and an intact city wall. Riga reminded me a little of Krakow.

We broke the journey to Riga by stopping for one night in Pärnu. This is a small resort town. There are some nice parks and a sandy beach.

Helsinki is also an option. The seafront offers lots of opportunities for walks: the city centre, the Sibelius monument Suomenlinna, Seurasaari and the Central Park. Helsinki is not very old though, and the architecture is mostly Neo-classical and Art Nouveau. Porvoo is about an hour away from Helsinki, and offers old buildings and a river. Its worth a day trip at least.
