Three friends and me are travelling to Tallinn in mid-October but I have heard from some other people that violent crime is quite high in the city, especially muggings. Is this true?
Also what will the weather be like in Mid-October? Very cold?
I understand tht Tallinn, especially Old Town is nowhere near as cheap to drink compared to a few years ago. Is this correct? I have heard beer is the same price as UK.

Don%26#39;t believe every rumour you hear. You%26#39;re safer in Tallinn than in many British inner city areas. Take the obvious precautions necessary anywhere and the risk of being robed is low. I%26#39;ve been going there a lot for 30-odd years (and not entirely sober) and never had a problem.
Mid-October? Not yet icy but cold, most likely, roughly like November in Southern England. Can%26#39;t say for sure, of course.
It%26#39;s true prices have gone up a lot, but I doubt they%26#39;re up to Brit levels yet. You can save a few quid by keeping away from the main tourist areas, like Town Hall Square in the Old Town, where beer prices are highest.

Myself and a friend (both female) were in Tallinn at the beginning of July and never felt worried about our safety. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and as long as you are careful with with your bag/wallet/credit cards etc (just like you would be if you were going anywhere these days) then I can%26#39;t see you having many problems. However, we did see a few guys who were pretty drunk early in the morning and could have been vulnerable to muggings (so the beer can%26#39;t be that expensive!). However, this can obviously be avoided by not putting yourself in that position in the first place! :o)

Ms Tastic99, I%26#39;ve been drunk in Tallinn more times than you%26#39;ve had hot dinners and I%26#39;ve never had any bother. This should not be construed as advice to do anything stupid, however. On any given evening there are plenty of drunks in Tallinn. Muggers will naturally go for the easiest targets.

I felt totally safe in Tallinn, its a lovely city with some fab restaurants and cafes. The drinks are very cheap in Estonia compared to other parts of the world.

Just to reiterate what people have said in that we have felt very safe in Tallinn, even wandering about late at night.
Just employ the same precautions you would at home i.e. stick to well lit areas, don%26#39;t %26#39;advertise%26#39; your valuables etc.. and you%26#39;ll be fine.
As for beer prices last summer they were still less than my part of the UK (lucky to get a pint for less than £3.00/£3.50 here!) but certainly not as cheap as other European destinations.
Same with the food, however, the food, beer and ambience of the bars and restaurants are excellent so ..
We have just booked a pre-Christmas trip, our third to Tallinn, yippee!

just to tack on a question to this topic, when is the best time of year to go to tallin?
|||
Each season has its own charm. Most people find they want to go back so they%26#39;ll be able to sample different aspects.

thanks john.

I think May is the best time as already warm but you can still meet locals too (in summer most locals have left the city, old town is full of tourists only). Snowy winters are beautiful too but you never know nowdays when it snows.
Safety- there are a few pickpockets (drug users) in the city- just avoid lonely corners at night.

Never had any problems in Tallinn. As another poster said, it has a safer feel to it than some British cities, especially at night.
The Old Town is fantastic, and whilst it may be slightly more expensive than in the past, that is only to be expected with more foreign tourists who are used to paying more for stuff. The prices in the Old Town are about the same as Britain, though still cheaper than places like London.
I have been at this time of year in the past, and it hasn%26#39;t been significantly colder than UK temp%26#39; at that time of year. Take a coat/jacket just in case, but you will have a good time. Do try the Restaurants in the Old Town, rather than McDonalds, you will pay more, but the food is great, and you can even eat outside in the main square at this time of year, they give you a blanket for your legs, and they have those outdoor heaters.
