I am from the USA and was in Tallin for 2 days in 1980. I am considering going there for a few days before continuing to St Peterburg.
I would welcome anyon%26#39;s opinions on what to do and see in two days in the city.
Also - I see that the train no longer runs to St Peterburg - so I would welcome any comments on taking the BUS from Tallin to St Peterburg and how long it takes.
thanks!

Tallinn is far more visitor-friendly than it was in 1980. You obviously already know about the Old Town, but today there are many more outdoor cafés where you can enjoy a glass or cup and admire the setting. You could easily spend a day tootling about the Old Town. For the second day, the outdoor museum at Rocca al Mare might be a good choice if you%26#39;re not too footsore, or perhaps the 15th century ruined Brigittine convent (which you probably saw in 1980 - it was close to the action of the sailing Olympics).
There are now zillions of little museums trying to grab a piece of the tourist budget, but at least the Museum of the Occupations is worth a look, if only to bring back memories.

Hello,
I think today%26#39;s Tallinn will surprise you pleasantly. It has strongly changed. In my opinion to the best side.
Concerning the trip to St.-Petersburg. There is a good bus service between Tallinn and St.-Petersburg. Buses go every day, some times in a day. So you can choose time most suitable to you. The road will take approximately 8 hours.

Best wishes!

thank you both
When I was there in 1980 as a student in Leningrad and it was during a national song fest that was held at the outdoor auditorium. We were only there for two days - but I remember the city was quite beautiful, even in the Soviet period! I would love to see it again.
Thank you for the link to the bus lines.

I would add Kadriorg to John%26#39;s suggestions.

Hi there
Just got back from Tallinn earlier today. We spent 4 days there between Christmas and New Year. I wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to go back again, lovely. You can%26#39;t go wrong with wondering around the old town, visiting Toompea and treat yourself to a meal at Olde Hansa or Peppersack. We spent several hours at the Museum of the Occupation which was very informative and makes you realise what a rough ride Estonia has had in the recent past. We visited the Maritime museum which consisted of 4 boats. Having said that the guides were incredibly helpful and we did have the opportunity to go on a 1930%26#39;s submarine. Something I had always wanted to do. Helpful hint - don%26#39;t buy a Tallinn tourist ticket, as you will find the museums are reasonably cheap and nearly everything you want to see is within the old town (walking distance) but do get a copy of the Tallinn book which they supply as it is loaded with great ideas.
Have a lovely time
Sally

I would not necessarily agree with Sally%26#39;s comment about the Tallin Card.
Obviously it depends on what you are doing but the card gives free travel on all city transport and maybe useful if going to Pirita, Kadriorg, Folk Museum etc. It certainly saves the hassle of having to deal with tickets every time you get on the bus or tram.

You can buy a book of ten bus/tram tickets cheaply from any kiosk in the town. To make the Tallinn card worthwhile, you have to have an insatiable appetite for museums. Unless you spend all your time running between museums, you pay a hefty surcharge on any convenience you gain from the card. Whether or not you think it%26#39;s worth it is up to you, but I advise visitors not to bother with these. Same with the Helsinki card.
